You can't walk down the streets of Boston without hearing the buzz about innovation. In this course, students will explore practices that particular cities, states, and countries have taken to promote innovation. Using Boston's "cleantech cluster" as a case study, they will then outline the ideal features of a city that is a hub for entrepreneurship, looking at both public and private mechanisms for promoting such activities in urban areas. Finally, we will build upon lessons learned about growing entrepreneurial ecosystems by having students draft a proposal and pitch for the formation and long-term sustainability of a yet-to-be-established incubator in the field of their choosing (life sciences, cleantech, fashion, big data, etc).

"Identify the problem. Shape the idea. Scale the solution." How is it that one comes up with an idea for the next big business or technological innovation? It all starts with a problem. Ideas are simply the solutions and business ventures the execution. This class is a semester of hands-on, project based learning designed to teach you how to reframe problems and create startup based solutions. Over the course of the semester, you'll not only get to take an idea from start to finish, but also collaborate with like-minded freshman, visit local startups, attend networking workshops, and finally pitch your solution to business professionals. Get ready to redefine innovation.
